SECOND CHANCE

“On your marks,” said the starter.

Jazz got ready.

“Set.”

Jazz took her stance. She didn’t move. She didn’t even breathe.

She had been given another chance—sprinters are allowed one false start.

Her dad got one more chance, too. But the ref said that if he walked onto the field again, he’d have to leave the meet.

Jazz focused on her race. If she thought about what her dad had done, she would cry.

“Pop!” went the starter’s gun.

Jazz took off. Instantly, she was upright. Arms pumping. Big, strong moves. Running as fast as she could.

Don’t look back. Halfway there. Finish line. Closer. Closer. Closer.

Jazz pulled both arms back. Her head and shoulders dipped forward. Her chest broke the tape.
